The land's large tribal community has rich cultural heritage and creates charming handicrafts and idols. The magnificient palace, Neer Mahal, built on an island in Rudrasagar is one of the finest tourist attractions in Tripura. The major tourist centres and their attractions are described below :

Agartala

Being the capital of Tripura, Agartala is a well planned city. The tourist attractions in and around Agartala are -

a) Ujjayant Palace - It is a magnificient edifice of former Maharajas of Tripura constructed in the heart of Agartala town in about 1.5 sq.km. area in Indo-Roman architectural style. There are also two lakes in front of the Palace.

b) Buddha Vihar - A Buddhist shrine preserving some of the beautiful metal idols of Lord Buddha.

c) Kunjaban - A picturesque hillock with unparallel scenic beauty.

e) Sipahijala - A beautiful picnic spot and wildlife sanctuary located on Agartala-Udaipur road about 22 kms away from Agartala. It is thickly vegetated with a variety of forest species. There is also a lake inside which is spread over an area of 3 sq.km. and with boating facilities. The sanctuary is also having a toy train which is being run on a track of about 1.5 kms.

It has water area of 512 sq kms suitable for various water sports activities like boating, rowing, kayaking etc. Neermahal is a beautiful palace built around 60 years ago inside Rudrasagar. It is a symbol of historical and cultural heritage of Tripura. Moonlit nights are romantic at Neermahal. It is about 2 kms away from Rajghat from where one has to go by boat.

Unakoti Tirtha

A hillock in North Tripura, located about 180 kms away from Agartala, is known for its rock murals. The holy shrine at Unakoti is also one of the most sacred pilgrimage centres. The huge rock carvings at Unakoti are mainly of two types - the rock curved figures and stone images. Unakoti is located in a thickly vegetated jungle.

Jampui Hill

It is the highest hill range in the state at an altitude of about 3000 ft. above sea level and is located about 200 kms away from Agartala towards Mizoram border. The hill is known for its charming landscape and a climate of 'perpetual spring'. Orange cultivation is the main occupation of the villagers in the hills. Various species of flower bearing orchids are also grown in the hills. The Jampui hill villages are inhabited with Lushai tribes who have a strikingly distinct cultural identity. The overall setting of the village is ideal for the development of "Village Tourism."
