INLAKS FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS

About the Inlaks Foundation

The Inlaks Foundation was created by Mr. Indoo Shivdasani in 1976 and registered as a charitable trust in Liechtenstein. Mr. Indoo Shivdasani was the son of a member of the Indian Civil Service. He, his father and many other members of his family were educated both in India and in the UK. After Cambridge, rather than following in his father's footsteps, he became an entrepreneur, setting up his own business. Within a few years his business had worldwide interests in agro-allied industries finance, industry and trade. He considered his Cambridge education as having been paramount in breeding his productive and cultural life and believed therefore in the importance of higher education overseas for the young for developing their vision and their capacity to operate in society and contribute to the changes. The Foundation concentrates mainly on providing scholarships to outstanding young people, to develop their professional, scientific, artistic or cultural abilities abroad. Each year 10-15 people are sent overseas either to leading institutions or to carryout specific projects the Foundation prides itself on offering scholarships in a wide range of subjects many of which are not covered by other fund-giving bodies. The Foundation also operates a grants scheme in India (Take-Off Grants) on the charitable side, Inlaks Foundation contributes to or operates a number of medical and social projects.

The Foundation is managed by a Board of Trustees. The Director, who is also a Trustee, acts as Chief Executive and operates jointly with the Executive Committee. The Head Office of the Foundation is in London. The Foundation also has an office in Delhi.

The capital, which, at the time of Mr. Shivdasani's death amounted to $1.3 million, has since been increased through further donations and appreciation and is now $10.9 million.
