Tourism in Mizoram


Mizoram is a mountainous state bordered by Bangladesh in the west, Myanmar in the east and south and Assam and Manipur in the north. It has great natural beauty and rich flora and fauna. Mizoram is one of the hill states with splendid natural beauty and a Christian society. It is endowed with beautiful landscapes, natural tropical forests and a variety of wildlife. Its capital, Aizawl, is a picturesque town built in tiers on the hillside. The state is also inhabited by a society with a tradition of music and dance. The unique cultural attraction of the state is its "Cheraw" or Bamboo Dance. Khuallam is another interesting dance in colourful profiles to the tune of drums.

The major tourist centres in the state and their attractions are listed below :

Aizawl

Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, is a hilly city located at a height of about 4000 ft. above the sea level. It is a religious and cultural centre of Mizos where plenty of indigenous handicrafts are available. The 'Viewing Gallery' of Aizawl is an important landmark of the city. The other attractions include the museum, zoo etc.

Tamdil

It is a natural lake with virgin forests around and is located about 60 kms. from Aizawl. It is also a picnic spot on the banks of river Tlawng.

Champhai

It is a charming hill station at a distance of about 210 kms. from Aizawl. The place is known for sericulture and Runotlang village where people lead an ancestral way of life.

Vantawng

It is the highest and the most beautiful waterfall in Mizoram and Thenzawl is a hill station nearly 5 kms away from Vantawng.

Berawtlang

It is a beautiful hill station close to Aizawl which has the potential for development as a major resort.
